I have a new car.
It is a 2003 MITSUBISHI LANCER. NOT EVO
Anyway it is an automatic car. But I am 16 and always wanted my first car to be a manual car.
So, how much could it cost to change it from automatic to manual???
It will be done in a shop, NOT by myself. The mecanic is a good friend of my dad`s so let`s assume he treats me well.
How much aprox. to change it???????Changing car from automatic to manual shifting? Why would you want to change it?
Automatics are so much better!
Your looking at over 2 grand at least. .... Is it worth it? Save the money and just accept that you have a car that is in good running order.
Well that's my opinion... anywayChanging car from automatic to manual shifting?Depends on where you get the transmission but i would say anywhere from $2500-3000.Changing car from automatic to manual shifting?I asked this exact same question and got %26quot;sell it and buy the same car in manual%26quot;. If I wanted to hear that I wouldn't have asked the question.
And not, you HAVE to change the transmission. You can't just pop out the automatic shifter and replace it with a manual shifter. You will have to find a transmission and all the parts that is not on your automatic.
Edit: Why is everyone making this seem like an impossible task and %26quot;no precedent%26quot;? I've seen it done so many times. My brother swapped out his auto tranny for a 5-speed 2 years ago IN OUR GARAGE and the car runs to this day just fine. You just have to know what you're doing. And no you will not reprogram the computer. you will swap it out for a 5-speed computer of the same model. Again, I saw my brother and his friend do it in my parent's garage in under a week.Boy... (I'm more than twice as old as you are, so I can call you that)... You should study a bit what you are asking for, so you don't ask the impossible, or the highly improbable. But now that you asked it, let's get you that answer. You don't have to like it, you just have to know it.
Automatic and manual transmission are completely different.
* auto has no gear shift, no clutch pedal, weighs more
* manual has gear shift, clutch pedal, weighs a bit less
Mechanically they're completely different as well. Thus, you can't %26quot;change%26quot; from one to the other without changing the whole thing itself. It's like asking for a sex change without cutting anything. :D It simply doesn't make sense.
So, the answer to your last question is %26quot;no, not possible%26quot;.
As for how much it would cost, it's cost a LOT more than just replacing the transmission itself. The engine computer has to be completely re-programmed for the transmission, a clutch pedal must be added and connected to the clutch, which would require breaking holes into the body firewall (that separates the engine from the cabin), and that would completely void the warranty and create a nightmare for mechanics who would be baffled by your chimera.
As others have said, it'd be MUCH easier (and cheaper) to sell the automatic and buy a manual.
This is NOT something regularly done in a mechanics shop. There are no manuals for this operation. Your friend, even if he's an experience mechanic, would be in unexplored territory, and if there are problems, you will be up **** creek without a paddle, as dealers can't help you in this venture. You could be just spending money and end up with undrivable junk. And since there's no standards on this, no one knows how much labor will be required. Expect to pay over $1000 for the manual transmission alone, not counting installation, though you can probably sell the auto transmission for something to offset the cost. It's the labor and later troubleshooting that cost $$$.
Which is why we say, sell the auto and buy a manual instead.
