How has the hybrid Car changed the world in the past 10 years? 2000-2010?

It's a little hard to say, since a lot of the effects of its introduction won't be apparant for a few more years...

But here's some thoughts, both pro and con...

1. It proved that a car with an energy-saving hybrid engine could be mass produced and a popular seller. Right up until its introduction, a lot of car companies were naysaying its viability. Now, the companies are believers.

2. It had a hand in sending the U.S. automakers into financial peril, although it is the fault of the US automakers themselves. While the US was cranking SUV after SUV out of their dwindling factories, they fell behind in green-car technology, and lost a lot of sales during the gas crunch when a lot of people switched from SUV's to hybrids.

3. It has had a negligible effect on air quality, although each passing year they make up more of the traffic on the road, which should result in cleaner air in the short-to-midterm

4. It has helped clog up carpool lanes (many were given a lifetime carpool pass even when occupied by one person)

5. It has made green car technology a major talking point in society, which impels people to want even greener, and more gas-free vehicles. That demand,.in turn, should, in theory, result in more innovation.

6. It found a way to break the $23,000 mark for a compact car.

7. Made Nissan and Toyota cash-rich.

Frankly, after a decade of hybrid cars, I was kinda hoping we'd be closer to being off oil than we in fact are. I was at the LA Car Show last month, and even with a %26quot;green%26quot; theme that was embraced by the German, Japanese, and Korean car companies, the US had their same old, lumpen, boring, gas-guzzling garbage on display, plus one Chevy Volt. Not many visitors were near the US cars, the other makers were mobbed. So, interest in hybrid and green technology was certainly evident. How has the hybrid Car changed the world in the past 10 years? 2000-2010?I think it's woken people up the fact that they don't need a plain old fashioned gasoline powered car to be happy. In many aspects of life, people embrace new technology (cell phones...) but in cars they usually stick with what they know.
