Changing ATF on a old car? is there going to be any problem if i change the fluid in a honda 1997 accord lx?

im just afraid if i change the atf the car might not be able to handle the new things due to the fact the car is old? any advice.? thanksChanging ATF on a old car? is there going to be any problem if i change the fluid in a honda 1997 accord lx?I have a 95 accord I changed the fluid in and it helped a little. But it still shifts hard...it's common in old Hondas. The 67Bronco guy above me doesn't know what he's talking about...our cars don't have transmission fluid filters, so you don't even have to drop the pan.

Before you start, make sure you have plenty of Honda ATF - Z1 fluid as this is the only fluid you want to run in your transmission.

Make sure your car is at operating temperature and remove the transmission drain plug. It is on the passenger side, near the tire. While the fluid is draining, clean all the nasty gunk off of the plug. Those are metal shavings. When it's all drained out, put the plug back up and fill it back with however much came out. I forgot how much it holds. Drive the car around for a little bit, the repeat the process.

You want to repeat this drain/fill process at least 3 times here's why: the torque converter has about 1/3 of your fluid stored in there that doesn't drain out of the pan. When you drain and fill it like this it gives a chance for that old fluid to mix with the new, so you can get most of the old out by the 3rd or 4th cycle.

Remember that you check honda transmission fluid level when the fluid is hot, but the car is off. And always run it through the gears first to get an accurate reading!

Have fun =]

Just drop the pan and change the filter. I don't recommend doing a power flush they can sometimes cause problems.

No, it will help the car if anything. I recently helped change the ATF on my cousins 1997 Accord. Car still runs just as good if not better.
