Process in changing the title to a car?

I live in ILLinois and i want to know if I buy this car from my friend, what is the process I must go through to chnge the title and get insurance and plates etc? Please help me. I have no idea and don't want to talk to my dad about it until I know that facts. I am 20 and clueless.Process in changing the title to a car?Pretty much what oklatom said.

How to Transfer the Title

The seller should sign the title over to the buyer on the back of the title certificate, filling in the odometer statement. Be sure to fill in the buyer's name correctly鈥昳t will need to match the name on the application for the new title.



When applying for a new title for a vehicle you've just bought, you'll need the surrendered title you got from the seller. You'll also need one of two forms (see bellow), depending on whether you intend to register the vehicle at the same time (in most cases, you will).

Your friend signs the title and gives it to you. You take the signed title and car down the department of motor vehicles and they will help you with getting it registered and the title changed to your name.
Begain make sure it a clear title, then you both go to gether and get the title notarized, or just one of you, that way M.V.D, see that person signing the title over to you. Now here in Az, you take the plates off after you sold the car and turn, them over to M.V.D. it clears your ower ship of it. And go from there.
talk to your dad he will tell you the right thing to do. but if you don't want to you and your friend go to tax office and they will help you change the title and plates. insurance call allstate or someone like that . good luck
