Changing a car reg plate in the UK.?

I'm about to buy a private reg and wondered if anyone has had any recent dealings with the police about inserting a space where it shouldn't be.

I know there are laws governing the text, etc and the Police were very hot on this, but things seem to have cooled down a little, or have they?Changing a car reg plate in the UK.?In an Mot test as long as the number plate has an obvious space between the first and second parts of the registration , eg A123 ABC, AB51 ABC, there is nothing stopping you adding extra spaces.

For several years now the person/garage making up the actual plate has to include their own identification, usually garage name and postcode. As it is theoretically illegal to have a wrongly spaced number plate it is very hard to find someone to make it up for you. Most major garages use a computer to print the number and this does not allow odd spacing.

Some back street garages will make them up for you at a price because they include no identification and know that they are breaking the law.

Once you have obtained a set it is common to take the same actual number plates with you each time you change cars, that is why you often see brand new cars with obviously old personalised plates
