Can the MSRP of a car change through the year?

I am in the market to lease a 2009 jetta se, and i've had several dealers quote me a price higher than the listed msrp on the Volkswagen website. Now, i know that I shouldn't even be paying MSRP and don't plan on it. One dealer actually said that the MSRP changed during the year.

Is this even possible or am i dealing with a shady sales tactic? Can the MSRP of a car change through the year?Carmakers sometimes do adjust the prices mid year, so it is possible. An 09 Jetta is a leftover though - 2010 cars are on the road, you should be able to get that car for significantly less than MSRP (it's not like Jetta's are the hottest car on the market).

go to Edmunds.com and price it out, they will show you the average of what that car with the options you choose is selling for in your area. Considering that the average includes people that overpay, you should be able to get it for less than that number, whatever it is.

Here's a good rule of thumb - MSRP is irrelevant. Start at dealer invoice and work up, not from MSRP down. Edmunds gives you invoice numbers too.

If anything the MSRP of a car goes down in value the later in the year you go as the new 2010 models come out usually in Aug or Sept as they become last year's models. However when searching for the MSRP make sure that you include all the options on the car you are looking at , some options make a large $ difference. My opinion: Shady Sales Tactic

no the MSRP will go up throughout the year! i know for a fact that chevy and ford will increase their base prices of the cars by a couple hundred dollars several times throughout the year! they will take the old stickers out and even put new ones in!!! i would assume all car makers do the same think!
