Adding/changing car coolant?

when i looked at the coolant level....it was below the minimum line. i was wondering if i just pour some more in. i am thinking its the radiator coolant cause its up right in front near the fan. i have a 2000 honda civic ex if that helps. so do i basically open up the container and pour some in? and special kinds i should buy? or is this all a project for a prof. mechanic? thanksAdding/changing car coolant?Whatever you do, DO NOT OPEN THE COVER WHILE THE ENGINE IS HOT. Wait till it cools or you'll be covered in green hot liquid. You can add it in yourself (it doesnt need to be any special kind...you can usually find it at a gas station %26amp; yes, it is up front by the fan), but you may want to figure out why its going down. Might be a bigger problem...like a leak or even a cracked head...
Adding/changing car coolant?
I have a jug of 50/50 mix coolant in my car and I just pour it in the container whenever it needs it. The coolant container should be marked with the words %26quot;coolant%26quot; on the cap, but if it doesn't you can tell if it is coolant by the odor (it won't smell like water), or if you CAN get your finger in some of the liquid it will have a slippery feeling.

The auto parts place can tell you what kind of coolant should be put in.

well your biggest problem isnt that your antifreeze is low, it is that you are loosing it. it could be anything from broken line, a leaking radiator to worse case senario, a bad head gasket. follow the lines from the overflow tank, the lines from the radiator to the block, if you see any leaks than its the lines. check your exhaust for steam on a hot day, if your getting any of that; then you are burning antifreezee. then you will need a head gasket not good. for now pour some 50/50 and see how long it takes to go back down.
You should add a premixed antifreeze .Or a non-premixed using distilled water to mix it.

If you just wish to top it off because your in an area that never freezes then you can just add distilled water.Never add normal tap water if you can avoid it.Many tap waters and well waters can contain several things that are bad for an engine coolant system.[for example,gypsum,iron,chlorine,etc...]
It would a Good Idea to take it to the Honda auto center for maintenance check up.Tell them you are low on coolant and what the Bill would be, Make sure it is a Busy Clean place. Busy clean garages are run by people who know how to fix cars right! Most of the time.
Verify that you are opening the coolant container, and put some fresh coolant in ----- if it has been a while since the last flush, get it flushed. Always with a cold engine, never hot.
If you are not sure where the Radiator spout is I would have someone else check it out.
