Changing a classic car to run on unleaded?

I've just brought a 1968 Wolsely 1300. What is involved in getting it to run unleaded? I dont want to keep using lead supplement. What do i need to replace? What would the cost be if a garage done it for me?? Thanks.Changing a classic car to run on unleaded?Hardened valve seats in the cylinder head are required. Already-modified heads for those BL A-series engines are available off-the-shelf from classic engine specialists, you're looking at a few hundred quid for one.

Beauty is, though, you should be able to fit a lead-free head from an eighties mini or metro for beer money - just get yourself onto the forums for classic minis and austins, and they'll help you out with exactly which cylinder head you need, and its part number. Hell, there'll probably be someone who can sell you one he's got kicking around his garage. Advantage of an engine that's spent about fifty years in god knows how many cars ;-)

It's a good old-fashioned pushrod engine, so it won't be too expensive if you get someone to fit it for you. These are not complicated bits of kit.

If you don't like putting the lead in, then sell it. I'm sure that the car is worth some money to someone (probably a junk yard)

it needs hardened valve seats and stainless steel exhaust valves ....about $1000 installed
Hardened valve seats need fitting to the cylinder head (poss valves too), however its just possible that widening valve clearances slightly and tootling around town (ie no motorway thrashing ) and you may get away with it for some time.

However 95 ULG may cause detonation in the cylinder leading to melted pistons, so use the 98 ULG stuff if it pinks.

ULG - unleaded gas is rubbish and is more dangerous than unleaded was. There was never any danger from tetra eythl lead in unleaded. Stuff the Eu, bring back 5 Star.
A series engine. either fit valve seats and uprated valves. or use Redex upper cylinder lubricant from say Halfords. you can buy a lot of this in relation to the cost of convertion.
