How can i get a rusted wheel off my car?

Changing out wheels and tires on my wife's car, changed 3 no problem, last wheel is rusted in place! Any tips?



It's been soaking with penetrating oil for over an hour, and I've been hitting it with a metal bar in hopes that it will %26quot;pop%26quot; off, but no luck yet!

hitting it with a rubber mallet on the inside sidewall of the tire. like me, you may not have 1 so i usually sit on the ground and kick the heck out of it on one side

The tapping on the rim close to the center is a good idea. This should help the penetrating oil to get into the rusted areas. But some times there is no substitute for a big hammer on the back of the rims.
Take a wooden block, and put it against the wheel. Then take the mechanic's favorite tool (a BFH = Big F Hammer) and whack the block of wood until the wheel comes free.



You may have to hit it hard several times, but it will come off.
i have pretty good luck with a 6%26quot; log about 4' long as a battering ram. hit the tire and it will twist sideways and pop.
you have to make sure to keep hitting it in different areas each time, if you keep hammering the same area it will cause it to dig in even more. there is really nothing else you can do. keep hammering, you should get it. this is the best way.



you can try a puller, but it is meant for pulling off rotors, i have modified them before to do bigger jobs. but i wouldnt recomend this way. anyways heres a picture of what one looks like

hit the back of the tire with a sledge hammer if you have one.
